1796. Small date, small letters. B-4, BB-61. Rarity 3. PCGS graded VF-25. Mostly untoned. An agreeable specimen whose mid-grade originality makes it suitable for just about any U.S. 18th and 19th Centuiry Type set. Much scarcer type, the Small Eagle reverse occurs in 1795-98 only and is more and more becoming difficult to find in choice condition like this. In an OGH (PCGS # 6859) .

Lot 1472
1798 B-1, BB-82 Small Eagle 13 Obverse Stars Rarity 3. NGC graded AU-58. CAC Approved. Subset of PCGS # 6867. Pop 1; 1 finer in 60. The Dr. Hesselgesser example fetched $356,500 as PCGS AU58. This scarce variety starts off with the usual 13 Stars (standard star count of the year), arranged 7 left and 6 right. Close date, knob 9, figures 98 close. Squared-off bottom to 7. The space between stars 6 and 7 is wider than the spaces between any stars 1 through 6. This obverse die was used to strike 1798 BB-82 (earlier use) and BB-91 (later use).

It is paired with a Small Eagle, Large Letters style reverse. Struck from the same die used to strike 1797 BB-73, there are eight berries in left branch. Lowest berry near ribbon bow is on inside of wreath. E of STATES lightly repunched. A leaf points to the left corner of the I in UNITED, another leaf points to the left corner of the first T in STATES while another leaf points to the very end of the O in OF. Another leaf is positioned away from the R in AMERICA.

This reverse die was used earlier to strike 1797 BB-73 dollars, Die States I through IV, then removed from the press and used to strike 1798 BB-82 Die State I (with cracks slightly advanced from 1797 Die State IV) and Die State II (equivalent to 1797 BB-73 Die State V), then the striking of 1798 BB-82 dollars was discontinued, and the reverse die was re-mated with the same 1797 obverse, and additional 1797 BB-73 dollars were struck.

Of the two 1798 die varieties with Small Eagle reverse (BB-81 and BB-82), 1798 BB-82 is the more plentiful, but only by a slight margin. 1798 BB-82 is the only 1798-dated dollar with 13 obverse stars in combination with the Small Eagle reverse; all others are mated with the Heraldic Eagle reverse.

An estimated 700 to 1,000 1798 BB-82 silver dollars exist. Several hundred specimens exist, most of which are VF. EF examples are quite scarce, and any coin in better grade is rare. True Mint State coins are great rarities. Bowers observed in his Bust Dollars encyclopedia, "I am not aware of any Mint State coin sold in recent years. The Thomas Cleneay listing is ‘ancient history’ numismatically.".
Estimated Value $140,000 - 150,000.

1836. Designer's name on base. Circulation issue. J-60. ANACS EF Details. Net Proof 12, Original. Plugged and tooled. Plugged at 12 o'clock. Even gray toning on both sides. Smooth surfaces and all of the major detail strong. Attractive rims. The United States Mint had ceased striking silver dollars in 1804. Although the denomination was the "flagship" monetary unit in U.S. coinage, demand for it came mostly from bullion depositors, and few dollar coins circulated in the beginning of the 19th century. By 1836, there was increasing interest in restoring the denomination. The Mint assigned Christian Gobrecht to the task of designing the obverse and reverses. This splendid marvel of coin craft, known today as the Gobrecht Silver Dollar, is his masterpiece. In modified form, Gobrecht’s seated Liberty would adorn American silver coins in various denominations from the late-1830s until 1891!

1864. NGC graded Proof 68. A spectacular gem proof featuring a natural blending of violet and royal blue iridescent toning on both sides. The fields are totally mirrored and the devices show enough frost as to suggest a Cameo designation. Only 470 Prooofs struck. Only once in a blue moon does the market experience the sale of such a fantastic Superb Gem Proof Seated Dollar of this date or any other year. A coin with razor-sharp motifs and deeply mirrored fields underneath the toning. Central obverse brilliance near the shield as if a spotlight were focused there gives way rapidly to the impressive deep colors, while the reverse is a study in similar but even richer, more saturated hues. Struck during the tumultuous Civil War years. The present beauty is an old favorite within the coin community, so to speak, as this was Lot 577 in ANR's sale of July 2003, where it was noted by the firm (now merged with Stack’s of New York City & Spectrum): "Overall the superb quality of the coin combined with the spectacular old time toning creates an aesthetically magnificent effect reminiscent of the coins found in collections such as that of Walter Childs, where such coins were purchased directly from the U.S. Mint and carefully stored and preserved for generations." We expect that our own firm’s clients will form an identical opinion of this incredible beauty, once they lay eyes on it, an opinion that will not have changed an iota in the ensuing time from the assessment made back in 2003. Pop 3; none finer .

1868. PCGS graded Proof 65+. Magnificent multicolor toning on both sides. A monster coin! Only 600 minted. Like the Proof minor denominations of the same date, Proof 1868 Silver Dollars seem to have all been struck with care by the dies and focus on detail by the Mint’s technicians. Proof 1868 Dollars are evenly distributed over the lower-range of the grade spectrum, but turn rare at this grade level and above, as one can see from the roster provided. 1876-S Chop Mark. PCGS graded EF-45. Gray toning. The chop mark is well hidden on the obverse. Pop 3; 81 finer (PCGS # 87043) .

Historic note: Many trade dollars went overseas and circulated in China, where local merchants would note their acceptance of the coins with their particular stamp or signature. These merchant stamps of approval would be hammered into the coin with a punch, or chop, and have since become known as chop marks. Some individual coins show a few to dozens of these chop marks reflecting their days in commerce on the Asian continent.

1880. NGC graded Proof 66. A stunning Gem Proof specimen featuring wonderful multi-color iridescent toning on both sides. Only 1,987 Proofs struck for this Proof-only year. With the possible exception of the clandestine 1884 & 1885 issues, all Proof Trade Dollars minted at Philadelphia in 1878-83 were distributed as part of the year's Proof sets. None were created for commercial purposes. Federal records indicate that slightly less than 2,000 specimens were delivered, a total that seems larger than normal for the period given the collector population at this time. Among the survivors, the Gem Proof 66 grade level is typically the highest that collectors can hope to afford since values increase dramatically in 67 and 68.

A conditionally rare Gem, this lovely Proof Trade Dollar is overlaid in toning iridescence that presupposes long, unattended storage, possibly in the original Mint tissue wrappers of the day. The fields are reflective in finish, generously so, the finish may have secured a Cameo designation at NGC were the devices just a bit more frosty in texture. The strike is razor sharp in all areas including the stars, and there is nary a detracting blemish to report. A high-end example in all regards that belongs in an advanced collection of Trade Dollars. Pop 43; 16 in PF-67, 1 in PF-68.
Estimated Value $7,000 - 7,500.
